Carrying our art supplies, easel and lunch, we hiked to get to this location on the edge of a cliff. It was a cool, foggy day, but at least we were out of the wind, huddled next to a crop of rocks. The ocean was the most amazing color of aqua. Passersby remarked that they had never seen the water that particular color before.

Old whale bones near Whaler’s Cabin at Point Lobos. Some of these bones are over 100 years old, lying under this cypress tree, which itself is probably a century old. They are a testimony to the life of these immense and wondrous creatures.

Eric found a large turn-out right down the road from where we are living. We had passed this spot several times and we always noted how amazing the view was.

We pass this ridge in Carmel Valley almost everyday. Each time, it displays a new and amazing view. A pilot used to design and fly gliders off these windswept hillsides in the 1930’s, hence the name Albatross Ridge. His descendants have planted a vineyard, ambitiously facing the challenge of a unique climate and fossil-heavy soil.

At the tail-end of our trip across the country, we stopped in Burbank to see Justin and Rachel and their precious new baby, Ryder. Walking around in their front yard, we saw the sun peeking through these shiny Bird of Paradise leaves. The splits in the leaves allow wind to pass through, protecting them from being broken. It beckoned to be put on canvas.

At this point the Carmel River empties into the ocean. In his 1945 novel “Cannery Row” John Steinbeck wrote: “The Carmel is a lovely little river. It isn’t very long but in its course it has everything a river should have.” On the other side of the beach is the ocean, which is also lovely, and has everything an ocean should have.

It was the end of the day, when some families are packing up from their trip to the beach and others are just arriving to watch the sunset. It seems this ritual takes place on a daily basis...people steadily streaming down the hill from the village, lining up to get a good view of the scene before them. This tree has a great view everyday.

We met Sevak and Yana at the cabin in Oakhurst, near Yosemite National Park. In the backyard, there is a small lake, fed by a spring. This scene makes me think of a time when bridges brought people together, a way to visit your neighbors and make life-long friends.

Old whale bones near Whaler’s Cabin at Point Lobos. We met a man who had been married for over 50 years. He showed us photos of the 11 children he and his wife had adopted. Some were from tragic circumstances. He was beaming with pride over his truly beautiful family.
